🧭 First — what is USK Bahrain?

We're the Bahraini chapter of Urban Sketchers, a worldwide community of people who draw on location. That means we sketch what we actually see in front of us — the Manama Corniche, the souqs of Muharraq, a café table, a doorway, a ship in the harbour. No photos, no imagination, just observation.

Our members include architects, illustrators, students, retirees, and complete beginners. There is no skill requirement to join. The only rule is that you show up and draw.

🗂️ What's on the website

The site has six main sections. Here's the quick version of what each one is for:

-       Home — Latest news, featured sketches, and upcoming events at a glance

-       Gallery — A browsable archive of member artwork, filtered by location or artist

-       Events — The full community calendar (sketch walks, workshops, past events)

-       Community — This forum, the member directory, and links to tutorials

-       Blog — Technique tips, beginner guides, and event recaps in longer form

-       Member Area — Your personal account once you've registered

💬 How the forum works (you're looking at it!)

Think of the forum as a notice board where anyone can post a message and anyone else can reply. It's organised into topics — so there might be a thread about which sketchbooks people prefer, another where someone shares their sketch from last Friday's walk, and another asking for advice on drawing in strong sunlight.

👁️ Just browsing? No account needed. You can read every thread, explore the full discussion archive, and get a feel for the community completely free — no sign-up, no registration, no strings attached. Everything is open to guests.

✍️ Want to post, reply, or join in? You'll need a free account. Registration takes a minute and is always free. Once you're signed up you can:

-       Reply to any thread

-       Start your own topics

-       Submit sketches to the Gallery

-       Upload photos from events you've attended

To register, click the Sign Up button at the top of the page, enter your name, email address, and a password, and you're in. If you're already a member, just click Log In.

To get involved once you're registered:

1. Browse the existing threads and read what interests you
2. Click Reply to add your thoughts to an existing conversation
3. Click New Thread (or equivalent) to start your own topic

No experience needed. Asking a beginner question is just as welcome as sharing a finished piece. This is a supportive space — we're all here to learn from each other.

A good first post: introduce yourself! Tell us your name, where you're based in Bahrain, and what made you interested in urban sketching.

🖼️ How to add your sketch to the Gallery

The Gallery is open to all members. You don't need to be experienced — every sketch is a genuine record of a place and a moment.

Here's how to submit:

1. Head to the Gallery page and find the submission form
2. Enter your name and email
3. Add the location where you made the sketch
4. Upload your image — JPG, PNG, or PDF, maximum 10 MB
5. Optionally write a sentence or two about the piece — where you were sitting, what drew your eye, how long it took
6. Tick the box to confirm it's your original work and you're happy for it to be published
7. Hit submit — the team reviews all submissions before they go live

A phone photo of a sketchbook page is absolutely fine. It doesn't need to be scanned.

📅 How to use the Events calendar

Everything we organise lives on the Events page. You can view it as a list or switch to a monthly calendar — whichever you find easier to scan.

We run two kinds of events:

-       Sketch walks — a group meets at a location, spreads out, draws for an hour or two, then shares what everyone made. Relaxed and social. No presentation required.

-       Workshops — more structured sessions focused on a specific technique, led by experienced members. Great if you want to learn something in a guided setting.

To join an event, check the listing for date, time, and meeting point. The easiest way to confirm you're coming is via the WhatsApp link on the Events page (+973 3974 5556) — just send a quick message.

If you attended an event and took photos, you can upload them directly from the Events page too. They go into the Past Events archive, which is worth a browse if you want to see what our gatherings look like before coming to your first one.

Have a location idea? There's a form to propose your own event — add a title, a short description, and a preferred date, and the team will take it from there.

📖 The Blog

The Blog is for longer reads — technique guides, event recaps, and anything else worth writing more than a paragraph about. If you're new to urban sketching, start with "5 Urban Sketching Tips for Beginners" — it's a solid introduction to the habits that make the biggest difference.

If you're not sure where to start, here's a simple path:

1. Browse the Gallery to see the range of work in the community
2. Check the Events page and pick something coming up that appeals to you
3. Reply to this post or start a thread in the forum to introduce yourself
4. Come to a sketch walk — bring whatever you have, even a ballpoint and a notebook
5. Submit your first sketch to the Gallery after the event

That's it. Everything else you'll figure out as you go.
